2. Next generation languages

Computing started out with pioneer engineers such as Tommy Flowers. He, along with Alan Turing, developed the first electric programmable computer in 1943. They called it 'Colossus'.

Each program for Colossus had to be done in binary which was then made into punched paper tape. Colossus would read the tape, instruction by instruction.

As you can imagine, writing the software in binary is incredibly time consuming and difficult. At this level, the software is called machine code - we have a section on it here.

One way to look at programming language developments is to place them into 'generations' from first generation to fourth or even fifth generation.
