4. Examples of change

We have discussed the purpose of change management and the typical steps needed. Here are some examples of why organisations change.

Example 1:

The company is really successful and they are taking on more and more employees. But the old offices can no longer accommodate everyone. They need to move to new premises.

Example 2:

The quality of a product has been getting worse over time. New quality control processes have to be introduced.

Example 3:

The company is in trouble, with market share falling. Cutbacks are needed, both in staff and factories. Massive changes will be needed.

Example 4:

The organisation is a public body (e.g. tax office, school, hospital) a new government has just been elected and they want 'reform' through a change in policy. For example, a new school curriculum is to be introduced, or a hospital has to amalgamate with another one.

Example 5:

The old computer system is becoming obsolete, a brand new system is needed.

Example 6:

A new software system is to be introduced into the organisation. This will impact many of the existing systems and the way staff currently work.

As you can see, changes need to happen for all sorts of reasons. It is the purpose of change management to try and minimise the disruption.
